About Doodles

   A bit about Labradoodles:
Labradoodles originated during the late 80s in Australia as assistance dogs for the physically challenged. Their allergen reduced and low shedding coats are popular with people suffering from allergies. The Labrador Retriever and the Poodle are two highly intelligent breeds known for their excellent temperament and social behaviour. They produce a dog (Labradoodle) which is good with people of all ages with the ability and desire to work.

   Who should own a Labradoodle?
Prospective owners should be aware that unlike a pure bred Labrador Retriever or Poodle, the first cross Labradoodle litter may produce a variety of puppies in colour, size and coat. Coat possibilities include the hair coat, fleece coat and woolly coat depending on the generation. Doodles thrive on routine and must be given time for training to stimulate them. Training and early socialisation is the key to avoiding a dog with behavioural issues and active families/people are most suited to owning this breed. Labradoodles aren't going to suit everyone and this breed should not be considered if you have never met one. Calm and labradoodle do not sit easily in the same sentence; if you want to own a calm dog, choose a Labrador!

   Terminology:
An F1 is a first-cross Labradoodle (puppies from a Labrador and Poodle mating, either way round). This can produce a mixture of puppies with some taking after the Poodle parent, some take after the Labrador parent but most are somewhere in between.  They mature into adults with a hairy low shedding coat and a shaggy look all of their own.

If two F1(first-cross) Labradoodles are mated, their puppies are second-cross which is an F2.

Two F2 (second-cross dogs) bred together produce third-cross (F3) puppies. The numbering gets complicated when, for example, a second cross mother is mated to a third cross father. Anything more than a first or second cross could be called a multi-generation(multi-gen).

Back crossing is identified with the letter b. Back crossing an F1 Labradoodle will produce an F1b. For example, an F1 Labradoodle mated with a Poodle will produce an F1b puppy.  Breeders do this to increase the thickness of the coat and/or try to produce a puppy which will shed less than an F1.

   Choosing a reputable breeder:
Our success in raising healthy, well socialised puppies started with the mother and father of the puppy. If the adults are not in optimal shape physically and emotionally the puppies they produce will not have the best start in life and many of the imperfections, whether emotionally or physically, will be passed down to the puppies as the mother displays her emotional traits to her puppies while raising them.

A reputable breeder will only breed from health checked stock and ideally should have records for at least three generations to reduce the possibility of genetic defects in future litters. Prospective owners should insist on a British Veterinary Association certificate of hip scoring, and a certificate of current annual eye examination. Ideally you should look around and compare breeders who should be willing to impart information regarding the breed and their establishment. Always see the Dam with the litter. Watch how the puppies, dam/sire interact with the breeder.

DO NOT BUY A LABRADOODLE IF YOU HAVE NEVER MET ONE

All our dogs live with us as pets, but have been trained by us to either work as gundogs, compete in agility assessed as Pets as Therapy companions. Teazel, one of our F1 doodles, is currently being trained as a school dog with DHK. (Dogs Helping Kids).

   About the Labradoodle Team:
We are passionate about dogs and have been pet owners for over 20 years. We have enjoyed various activities and competitions with our dogs but our main interest now is  training and using our pets as working dogs helping children and visiting the elderly.

Gail trains (both people and dogs) and advises on  basic behaviour issues. She has experience of Field Trialing and Working Tests and has previously judged Working Tests under KC rules. She is currently studying for her Diploma in Canine Psychology and working through 4 levels of an agility instructor's course. She also competes in agility with Hobbit and Teazel.

In 2000 we began breeding Labradors and to date have bred 7 litters of quality Labrador gundogs who were well socialised before leaving the Dam and therefore maximising the dog’s potential. Our line is bred from health checked stock with low hips scores and current annual eye certificates. More importantly, our Labradors have excellent temperaments. Our adorable white standard poodle stud was bought in to ensure health and temperament. This is the sound basis for our Labradoodle line – 7 litters of F1 TrentisHoe Doodles and 1 litter of F1b, bred in our home.

Our bitches work as Pets as Therapy dogs and visit our local residential home weekly (see link).  Teazel is training with Dogs Helping Kids charity to work as a school dog.  Both Hobbit and Teazel compete in agility and Pepsi and Beau are our 2011 puppies in training for a lot of fun in the future.
